I was just thinking. You have a clear indicator of the problem - the
breathy sound. Get it running on one cylinder; turn up the idle screw so
you don't have to hold the throttle. Then find the noise. Move your head
around the engine to get close, then take a piece of hose - doesn't matter
what kind, could be a couple feet of old garden hose. Hold one end to your
ear, move the other end around the area where you think the noise is coming
from. That will pinpoint the source very nicely. If it's between two
cooling fins about 2/3 of the way up the cylinder, it's a head gasket.
