Subject : Re: [Virago] Power Problem
I've been thinking about this post. I've no experience with a 535 but the
systems aren't really any different than on my 1100. That does sound like
some of the typical TCI symptoms, but always check the other stuff first.
Run a strong dose of Seafoam with the fuel - might clean out something.
Then pull and clean the carbs. I've noticed on the 535 that the slides are
easy to access. Before pulling the carbs, try pulling the slides and see
how things look. It is very likely that the diaphragms are cracked, which
can cause problems. Dunno if they are still available. They are not for
the Hitachi carbs on the 1100, but maybe for yours. My 87 Venture had
Mikuni carbs and I just put 4 new slides in it for about $55 each. There
are places that fit new diaphragms to used Hitachi slides.

All that being said, the "flip a switch" sensation does sound electrical.
Does it seem rough, like it's only running on one cylinder? Here's
something to try. Run it for a minute, with the problem manifest, then
shut it down and carefully feel the head pipes near the engine. They
should both be pretty hot. Is one hot and one not? That tells you that a
cylinder is not firing.

I have a 87 535 virago.

I am having a problem with the bike not having much power, until it hits a
certain point, and then its like switching on a switch, and it takes off
like a bat out of Hades. As the bike heats up, the point where it gets
power drops, until the point where its more like a hesitation when you open
the throttle.

I have grounded the Voltage regulator, and made sure the carb vent tubes
are
Clear. Any other ideas on what to try? I have a bad feeling its the TCI,
And that's pricey.
