I've had this happen as well. Try lubricating the hiem joints in the linkage.

As the engine warms up the oil gets thinner.  Maybe the cold, thick oil
makes the shift feel smoother.  I can't say I've ever noticed this
phenomenon, just a guess.  What weight oil are you using?
