I remember when I was a kid we used to retard the spark on our cars to
do that .. sounded cool .. my '83 xv920 does that .. still sounds cool. 

But if you're foolish enough to want that cool sound to stop you could
advance the timing, I think, except that the timing is sealed on the
Virago.

I burn 93 octane. What do you burn? Have you tried running lower octane
fuel?
