Jeremy- wish I knew myself exactly how I did it! Thought I'd been in pretty good shape, doin' 2-3 cord of firewood a year, keeping a couple of acres of pine needles raked up, and trees trimmed, wrenchin' on whatever I can (have to) plus all the ridin' I could. Tried to make myself do my 20 push-ups & 10 pull-ups a day. Shoveling gravel on the road. Plus working.
I have a feeling that I may have done it on the job, but it may also have to do with the years of work catching up with me. Another office in the area was really hurtin' for help, as they had folks off hurt, on vacation, and one guy in jail. They were several days behind in stuff on the dock that had to be moved. Imagine a cardboard box that's 6'x6' and 5' deep. Then imagine it being full of bundles of magazines and catalogs. Imagine that the more you take out of it, the longer the reach to get the next bundle. Then imagine each bundle as containing 15-20 Calbela's catalogs (the big one that weighs a few pounds) and this was what I was doin' for 3-4-5 hours a day, after working in my own office.
Don't want to brag, but I'm gonna. I probably got more done in that amount of time than most of their folks would have done in 5-6 hours. And I'm glad that my back held up, given the problems I've had with it in the past.  ;^)
Since around the same time I was also throwing around lots of trunks of manzanitas that weighed maybe from 40-75 lbs., I can't say for sure that I hurt myself at work on any particular date, at any specific time. I've had several people (even one of the local college professors) say that I should just make up a date and time and turn it into a workman's comp thing, but that just isn't me.
As I said, wish I know just what it was that I did, so I could keep from doing it again. Just now, as I was walking downhill to my spring I tripped and fell on the bad arm. ARRRRRRRRRGH! Best bet is to keep yourself in shape and don't think that at 59 you can work faster and harder than the young yahoos who're less than half your age. ;^)
Looks as though it'll now be a couple of weeks more before I try the big bike.
