It's to keep them pesky birds from making deposits on them fancy/expensive

Well, the Corbin I got off a wreck a few years ago for $50 is
falling apart. Seams are breaking apart from vinyl degradation
(the diamond pattern in the middle of the seat is rapidly
separating). . . . He said you should use something like
Armorall or even Fantastic occasionally to help the vinyl
retain it's oils but even then, in time the vinyl will harden
up (he tapped on the seat to illustrate the almost plasticy
sound) and it's game over.
My 1983 Virago 920 still has its original seat and it's pliable
and supple and the only sign of wear or age is a small scuff
from my last accident. To all . . .
There are two things that age vinyl, sunlight and heat.
Parked in the sun, you get both at the same time. The reason
my Virago's seat is still supple is that the bike is always
garaged when not in use, and the garage temperature never
goes above 80F, it's almost always in the 50-75F range
(depending on whether it's winter or summer). AND, when
outside, it's always parked in the shade while stopped.
This may sound like I'm stereotyping, but I've noted on
many occasions that Harley Davidson riders will always
park their $20,000 bike in the sun, even when a shady
spot is available. I don't know why this is unless it's the
fact that there are more Harley Davidson's out there
than all other bikes combined, and it just seems that way.
In addition, sunlight will fade paint and fade instrument
(speedometer / tachometer) faceplates. It'll also age tires.
So, one of the best things you can do to keep your bike
looking good is to keep it out of the sun as much as
possible. If you must park it in the sun, throw a white
towel over the seat and something over the instruments
to shield it from just sitting in the sun.
You don't have to be anal about it. One or two 1-hr
stints in the sun per year won't undo your TLC as
long as those occur in the winter while the sun is
low in the sky. (joke)
