Well, here's a vote for QUIET pipes, not LOUD pipes...
I cut out my baffles, and it made the bike a lot louder, which I thought
sounded kind of cool. But on trips, the noise causes a lot of extra
fatigue, and just isn't good for the hearing, or for being a good
citizen. I wear earplugs, but it's not nearly enough. After a short
while of the "cool loud sound", I grew to despise the racket of being a
showoff or whatever. I'd put the baffles back in, but they got thrown away.
I'm looking forward to getting an ST1300 or maybe a BMW with really
super-quiet pipes, especially the 4-cylinder engines. I love the feel
and sound of the rushing wind as I whip around country roads on a long
tour, and the unbelievable racket of these blownout pipes just kills the
buzz. For me, anyway... Loud doesn't equal performance, power, speed,
or anything except showing off - a very shallow, superficial thrill of
only caring how something looks or sounds to other people - people who
really don't give a *#$*# about me anyway! Heh! So for me, really deep
down, I greatly prefer a high performance machine, and for being "In the
Wind", and not just "in the noise."
END SOAPBOX.
