Diesels got both 2 and 4 cycle engines.

I am not sure I understand what you meant by 2-cycle engines needing back
pressure to scavenge. Back pressure tends to impede the flow of gas into the
exhaust. I worked on a couple of 2 cycle outboard boat motors that my father
and brother-in-law had tuned so that a pulse of air, that was below ambient
pressure, would arrive at the exhaust valve just as it opened to encourage
more flow from the cylinder then had it seen ambient air pressure.
