I did that.  I doubt if a washer would help, at least not for long.  Mine
had SO much slop after many thousands of miles.  The bronze bushing is much
better, both because it tightened up the lever and because bronze on steel
is fundamentally much better than steel on steel, in terms of friction and
wear.
