it is there to actually slow the starter down, or reduce the initial torque, allowing the gears time to engage. i experimented with the clip removed, and the starter spun so quickly that the gears couldn;t engage. I have to tell you, since owning my Virago i've made a habit of listening to the way engine's start, be it boat, car, motorcycle or whatever. This is the only system i've heard that grinds. Just horrible engineering really. The clip costs about 6 dollars at the dealer
