Starter Question

Subject : Starter Question 
I tried to post this question on the forum at Delphi, but the site won't let me in. I noticed when changing the starter gears on the XV920, that the Hairpin clip is missing from the starter gear itself. The one on the Bendix stack is there and intact. My question is what does the one on the starter gear do? I can't seem to figure why it was there in the first place, and the bike ran without it...???
