Hi. I spent some time searching the archives. I got a few ideas, but nothing
exactly matching my bike's symptoms, so I wanted to see if anyone with a
more similiar experience could help me. FYI: My 75k mile XV500K has had a
recent carb service (clean and synch) and regular general maintenance (fluid
changes, valve adjustments, etc) at a dealer. Good clean air filter, plugs
are both a healthy grey when I clean them. The bike starts very reliably.
There is one consistent problem and two intermittent ones:
The consistent problem is that I can't get full throttle. The bike starts to
cough and I have to back off. This seems independent of how hot the bike is.
The intermittent problems are when the bike has run long enough to get good
and hot, there are two minor problems that arise:
1. Very intermittently (2 or 3 times in twenty miles): while cruising on the
highway, the bike will skip a beat, almost like it is starting to run out of
fuel (which it isn't), or like the coils forgot to fire, or something cut
off its air, seemingly for just one revolution. Its very quick when it
happens.
2. When I go from cruising to stopping at a light, I have to stay on the
throttle in small, brief increments to keep the idle from dipping down low
enough to die.
So far the things I have come across that seem worth looking at are:
1. Carb overflow tubes plugged?
2. plug replacement
3. coil check
Is there anything else that is just screaming to someone out there for me to
check? I'm going to take any suggestions and go over the bike with a
fine-toothed comb this weekend.
Thanks in advance for any tips provided,
