A guy like you who obviously likes to "get under the hood" of his computer
can certainly get more "bang for the buck" as far as raw power goes. Those
however who like simplicity, quality, performance without making a hobby out
of attaining it themselves, like Macs.
In some benchmarks the dual processor G4 800 is 300 times (yes, that's not a
typo, 300 times faster then a 2+ gHz Pentium 4)
Cpu clockspeed is kinda like raw engine displacement, a marginal indicator
of overall performance. (AMD with tell you the same thing)
Motorola's G3/4 chip architecture is far more efficient then Intel's
(shorter pipelines and less of them) Therefore a 700mhz Mac is closer to a
1ghz P4 but it depends so much on the type of task your benchmarking, Apple
chooses tasks that give their chip the edge, Intel the opposite.
I make my living working with, teaching, and managing a network of PC's
including Gateways, Dells, and tons of homemades. Windows, 95/98,2000, XP,
I use my Mac mostly because it's operating system (OS X) is way beyond
anything Microsoft has put out yet. I have yet to meet a techie (and I've
met lots of those) who truly knows both systems that didn't readily admit
the Mac was a superior machine overall. Not in every category maybe but
overall.
But to each his own. I don't use PCs for anything other then work (even
there most of what I do is done on my Mac) so I honestly can't give an
overall comparison. I can run Windows on my Mac too when I have too, which
isn't very often thank heaven.
IMHO Macs are better, but unlike the HD vs. Virago analogy, in this case you
get something for your buck.
Did I mention I like Viragos?
