"But how am i going to get the spacer(slider?) and washer out
of the lower fork tube. I know that no one else has probably done something
so stupid"

Don't count on it - I've done some way stupid things. That's the most sure
way to learn not to do it that way again. In fact, the list recently had a
"boy, look at the stupid stuff I done" session.

Terminology -
Fork tube - upper, long, chrome tube
Slider - lower, cast aluminum portion of the fork, to which the wheel,
fender and brakes mount

Can you pry the seal out with a screwdriver, or is it too deep in the bore
to get the right leverage? One good way would be a slide hammer with an
internal 3-jaw puller attachment. Do you know what that is? I think you
can borrow one from Autozone for no charge - just leave a refundable
deposit. You will damage the seal in any case.

Some bikes have no lower bushing on the fork tube, so you can slide the
tube in through the seal and upper bushing. However, the Virago has both
upper and lower bushings which won't slide past one another, so the fork
tube with the lower bushing has to go in before the upper bushing and seal.
The lower-upper bushing interference is how you get the whole mess apart
when you jerk the tube and slider in opposite directions.
