Subject : RE: Jimbo - jetting question
Hello Jeremy,

Yes I have Mikuni's with the stock replacement filter (love the pods).
This project was some what confused at it's start. I got the Needle kit some
time ago and fitted it but the bike ran very rich and killed 2 sets of plugs
in 400 miles each, so I removed the kit. I then fitted the exhaust and
refitted the jet kit but attempts to set it up were thwarted by the TCI
playing up. Once this was sorted my Father, in a spectacular fit of great
selfishness chose to die on me. This affected my logic so that when I fitted
the K&N filter I leaned everything out because this list said so. The bike
ran rather badly so I started increasing the main jets, now at K&N 122. This
has left the mid range rich, open throttle quickly = flat spot. I now
realise that the richness referred to on the list is this mid range so I
will be following your advice to drop the needle one ring from recommended.

The BSM exhaust has mechanical baffling. The great advantage it has is the
legally required Type Approval engraved on it. Obviously this is with the
removable baffles fitted. I some how appear to have mislaid them, oh well,
never mind.

The Virago is a nice running bike and I would not consider getting rid of
it. This, due to the usual life decisions is the first opportunity I have
had to fulfil my boyhood dream of "tuning" a bike. I also want to give it a
run on the local Drag Strip "Run wot u Brung" day. Jimbo

Jimbo,

I understand about the time problem. I wish I could make more of it, or
require less sleep, or something.

-You have Mikuni's, right?
-Did you get the K&N stock replacement filter?
-What were the choices of jet sizes you tried, DJ and stock? (DJ makes K&N
jet kits.)
-Didn't you try bigger mains and they didn't perform well on the top end?
-Mid range - do you have throttle response (hesitation) problems? Lowering
the needle one notch cured that for me.
-BSM pipes - do you know what the muffler construction is like - baffles,
'glass packing, etc?

You know, the Virago is a nice running bike. There are other, faster bikes
out there. Sometimes I wonder why we go through all this! Just too much
fun to resist, I guess.

Thanks,
Jeremy
