extra fuel filter

  Hi, 
  ] cleaned the  ,petcock , and fuel pump today 
  and found  so much dirt all around . 
   Some pipes were filled with dirt also .
   The fuel tank is a bit rusty i guess,
   i think the stock filter in the fuel tank isn't
  enough, so it's better to use an extra filter 
  between the petcock and fuel pump .
   Does anyone use an extra fuel filter ?
   Any disadvantages?
    Does it affect to the vacum ? 
  
Ps: My virago's petcock's "On" mode still not working 
although the reserve mode is ok. ] need help with the
inspections.
