To the guy who had trouble with his first valve-lash check:

Boy, can I identify with that! I also (first time out) identified the crank
bolt cover as the crank bolt itself. Fortunately I didn't wring it off; when
it wouldn't turn clockwise I just put the job off to the to the following
weekend.

The next weekend, things went somewhat smoother, except that I had the
cylinders 180 degrees out when setting the valves. As you can imagine, the
machine ran somewhat less than smoothly when I started it, so I had to shut
back down and tear into it again. Second time through I had the valves set
correctly.

The next time I checked the valves I got through the job OK, but when I
restarted after putting things back together the engine ran for only a few
seconds before it coughed to a stop. No amount of coaxing would get it to
start. I was about to tear into it again, wondering what could be wrong,
when I noticed that the gas tank was still sitting in a corner of the garage!
Once that was reinstalled the bike ran great!
