We have shot a number of projects on HDV using the Sony HVR-Z1.
The reason we looked at it, at all, was our experience with down
converting HDCam to DBC. Those results were very impressive and it
gave our clients a form of future proofing their footage, even though
I can still hear their moaning about the costs ringing in my ears.
So we set up some tests to see if HDV down converted gave us the same
sort of look, we shot the same vision twice, once as DVCam and the
other on HDV.
We captured that footage into an NLE as straight DVCam and the HDV
under the native resolution and then again under the Intermediate
codec. So we had 3 version of the same material. We then down
converted the 2 version of the HDV material and placed it into a
standard DV project with the DVCam material. We then created a 3 way
split screen, expecting that the down converted material would be a
lot better than the DVCam, imagine our surprise when we could see
little difference between any of the material, in-fact we had to put
a line in to show where the wipe was. So that was disappointing.
The pictures in its native format are great, but until we have away
of showing it (BRDVD or HDVD) its not a format we recommend to our
clients unless they have a strong commitment to future proofing and
will not pay for HDCam. Now we charge extra for HDV material because
its a pain to manage, its amazing how future proofing goes away when
you mention cost to these sort of clients.
Out of all these formats Panasonic in the long term have probably got
it right, they need to get the PCMCIA cards at an affordable price,
but it removes MPEG2 from the mix. Having said that, we need single
chip CMOS chips so that we use prime lenses and send to some distant
island those jerks that are squabbling over BRDVD and HDDVD, they
need to be real careful there, because the pro market may just move
on without them, into holographic technology, leaving them to duke it
out as the parade passes them by.
Merry Christmas to the list.
