This is Philip's basic argument, and has been for a very long time. And
Philip may get his wish - we will all see what happens in the next few
years, with the acceptance of DV for on air, and great cheap products like
Pro Tools 002, FCP using FW800 with AJA I/O, the DVX-100 camera, and of
course the graphics products like Photoshop and After Effects.

With a minimal investment of ALL these tools, there is no reason why a
"writer" (or creative producer that has lots of knowlege) can't do any cable
TV type show that you see on Discovery, Learining Channel, History Channel,
MTV, Animal Planet, etc, etc. with the "tools" I mentioned above. Instead
of buying the Mercedes, the "writer" buys the Jeep Cherokee, and with the
rest of the money (under 10 grand) buys ALL the audio, video, graphics,
drives, etc. gear that he needs to do a show.

Obviously, many of us (especially me) hopes this never happens. I have
great hopes that Discovery continues to follow its "HD delivery only"
policy, which is not fully in place yet. I hope that a high level of
production, and post production value continues in our industry.

But I cannot deny that Philip may be right, and may get his wish, and then
you can take your Quantel iQ, and shove it up your ass. Because lets face
it, if
you can write the show (i.e. Welcome to Disney World), shoot it with 2
DVX-100 cameras (you and your young, cheap assistant), edit it in your "free
comp-ed
hotel) on Xpress Pro or FCP, add the Photoshop/Illustrator/After
Effects/Live Type while your "assistant" does some minor audio sweetening
with the Pro Tools 002, and you dump your show off to a rented Digi Beta,
and deliver it - AND THE CABLE COMPANY IS OK WITH THIS QUALITY - well then,
you can take any amount for a budget ($6000 - $8000 for the week to finish
the show), and you just paid off all your gear, and made some money for
yourself, and now the next show is all money that you get to keep, except
for the $800 bucks per week that you pay your assistant. If this is the
model, then the "writer/producer"
with a working knowlege of these tools will do quite well for themselves,
and the rest of us will go out of business.
