I say:
In "the old days", subcarrier, blanking, vertical and horizontal drive
pulses were between 4 and 5 volts and fed separately from a sync generator to
whatever needed them. Those days are thankfully gone now thanks to pulse
generators built into VTRs and studio cameras, etc. that accept composite
video as a reference and make everything needed from it.
