LTC from SYMPHONY

The LTC from my Symphony suddenly seems to be irregular: cutting in and out
during play (the LTC light on the known-good betaSP blinks off and on
irregularly.

Obviously, this isn't supposed to be the case. What I'm wondering is: is
it possible I've damaged the BOB because of the way I've connected the LTC
at the record machine? As most engineer-types know, there's almost no
consistency in the way TC connectors are set up on Sony machines, or any
machine for that matter. On one of my machines, it's a balanced connector,
like normal audio, but on another it's a BNC connector.

Not being too gifted in the audio engineering department, I'm simply using
a simple $5 adapter to go from the balanced TC connection at the patch bay
to the input of the machine with the BNC connectors.

Could patching to this 'discount impedence adapter' potentially damage the
TC out on the BOB? My BOB has failed completely once before, and I'm
wondering if this might be associated with that earlier failure. When I
patch two VTRs together (regardless of how they're adapted to the patch bay)
the TC is rock solid.

Any ideas? Comments? Gun Aiming?

TIA
