 Changing your e-mail address

To change your e-mail address, use the email= option.

Send e-mail to Lyris@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx with the command in the body of
your message:

    set Avid-L email=[new-email-address]

For example, if you are currently subscribed to Avid-L with the
address bob@xxxxxxxx and want to
be subscribed as bob@xxxxxxxxxx you would send the following command

from your bob@xxxxxxxx account:

    set Avid-L email=bob@xxxxxxxxxx

Note: The text after the email= cannot have any spaces in it.

Digest version and other member types

The digest version is a compilation of entire day's Avid-L mail all
at once, in one long e-mail
message. These are created and sent automatically. This is often the
choice of those who want to look over Avid-L mail, but don't want to
receive individual messages
all day long.

Your options for member type include:

Mail Receive mail as it is contributed.
Digest Receive daily digest with all the messages of the day.
MIME Digest Receive daily digest with all the messages of the day
    in MIME format.
Index Receive daily index of the subject lines of the messages of
    the day.
Nomail Receive no mail at all.

To change your member type, send e-mail to Lyris@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx with the
command in the body of your message:

    set Avid-L [member type]

    Examples:
    set Avid-L digest
    set Avid-L MIME Digest

    Posting to Avid-L

    Send an e-mail message to:

    Avid-L@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

and it will be redistributed to everyone on the list. Please send
only items that are worth everyone's attention.

You cannot post to the digest version, as it is simply a compilation of
the regular version.

    Policies

How is the Avid-L going to be managed by Avid?

The Avid-L is maintained by Avid through AvidProNet.com, but Avid
does not control the content or
opinions posted. Because of that, please understand that the
opinions expressed on the Avid-L, even if posted by Avid employees, do
not necessarily represent the opinion or other "official word" from
Avid, or its subsidiaries or divisions.

You do not have to be a member of the AvidProNet site itself to
participate in the Avid-L. You can continue to participate in the Avid-L
without registering as an
AvidProNet member. If you want to be an AvidProNet member, you can
register at:
http://www.avidpronet.com/myaccount/register.html

However, like the other message boards and chat rooms on the
AvidProNet site, the Avid-L is subject to the same rules of the road
found in the AvidProNet Terms and Conditions of Use. Please take a
moment to review them, as they will apply to your use and participation
in the Avid-L. Also please take a look at the Communities "Rules" that
help make the use of any message service more pleasant for everyone.

What will happen to my e-mail address and name?

Avid does not intend to handle your names and e-mail addresses
different than before. That is to say, just because Avid is now
maintaining the list does not mean that Avid is going to take the Avid-L
e-mail addresses and use them as a separate marketing tools, or start
selling the Avid-L list to direct marketers.

The Avid-L is subject to the same Privacy Policy as the rest of the
AvidProNet site. Please take a look at the policy. Consistent with it,
Avid will not, without your
permission, use the Avid-L email information to contact you individually
with information about Avid, AvidProNet, or other topics Avid thinks may
be of interest to you, or distribute to third parties information that
identifies you individually and personally.

By merely subscribing (or continuing to subscribe) to the Avid-L
alone, Avid does not consider an Avid-L user to have given it permission
to use his or her e-mail
address for anything other than the Avid-L itself, and the proper
administration of the Avid-L or the Site in general. Avid-L users are
also not automatically registered as members of AvidProNet; you will
need to register separately. If and when you sign up as an AvidProNet
member, you are typically asked whether you want to receive
information from Avid or third parties. Be sure to review your choices
carefully to make sure you make the selections you personally want.

As with other portions of the Site, Avid reserves the right to use the
name and email to contact an Avid-L user about the Avid-L or Site
administrative matters. Avid
also reserves the right to continue to participate in the Avid-L like
any other user, such as posting information to the Avid-L that it
believes may be of interested to or otherwise appropriate for the Avid-L.

Please note that Avid-L is, and always has been, a public mailing list.
That is, every other subscriber or other third parties can read (or
forward to others) all the
information you post to the Avid-L, such as your name or e-mail address.
As always, Avid is not responsible for the use third parties may make of
information you have made publicly available in this or any other public
forum. Please take a look at the applicable Terms of Use and Privacy
Policy for more information about public information and forums.

    Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.
It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share
information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for
professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples
of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to
share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no
better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of
informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the
group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users
Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy
Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only
shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery
for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at
the NAB trade show in Las
Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,
Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive
reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true
international scope with over 300 international members. The community
included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate
organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,
as well as and multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, the Avid Production Network.
AvidProNet is Avid Technology's community and services Web portal for
media creation professionals. It is designed to provide Web-based tools
and services, enabling the user community to take advantage of the
Internet in their business.
